The big wave design
The wave is the whole story. It rises from the bottom left, curls into a deep tube of navy, ocean and sky blue, and breaks into white foam and spray dots on the right, painted loosely in watercolor so you can see every streak of water. Across the crest, the words loop in an easy black hand, with a tall capital B and a big round O.
The birthday boy's version keeps it simple: the Big One! and the wave, nothing else. Family shirts open with a small It's the, so they read It's the Big One!, and then add a title in tall, bold black capitals along the base of the wave, like MAMA, PAPA, SISTER or COUSIN. The mix of soft watercolor and strong black lettering makes the shirts easy to spot in a crowd at the beach.

Planning a big wave surf first birthday
An ocean or surf first birthday comes together around one strong color, and this wave gives you a whole range of blues to borrow. Pick two or three of them for the balloons, a navy and a turquoise with plenty of white, then add a few silver or white starfish and a little sand for texture. A beach first birthday, a surfs up party or an under-the-sea theme all fit the same palette, so you can lean into whichever your family loves.
